From September 3 to 5, 2025, the EcoWheatItaly project was presented at the 22nd European Conference on Multi-Agent Systems (EUMAS 2025), hosted by the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest (Romania), one of the most relevant European venues for research on distributed AI and agent-based simulation.
Prof. Gianfranco Giulioni (University “G. d’Annunzio” of Chieti-Pescara), together with Edmondo Di Giuseppe and Arianna Di Paola (CNR – Institute of BioEconomy), delivered the talk entitled “A Computational Approach to Sustainable Policies Evaluation of the Italian Wheat Production System”.
The presentation showcased an integrated framework combining an Agent-Based Model (ABM) with a Global Economic Model (GEM) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to assess the sustainability of agricultural policies.
The ABM replicates nearly 195,000 Italian wheat farms, initialized from RICA/FADN microdata and the Italian Agricultural Census, and simulates how farms react to both international wheat price dynamics and environmental awareness. Impacts are quantified in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and human health damage (DALYs).
As the authors emphasized:
“Our model integrates farm data, socio-economic simulation, and environmental assessment, making agents aware of the consequences of their production choices. This approach supports more informed policymaking in sustainable agriculture and helps anticipate the effects of global shocks.” (G. Giulioni, EUMAS 2025).
By participating in EUMAS 2025, EcoWheatItaly (PRIN 202288L9YN) strengthened its international positioning at the intersection of agricultural policy, sustainability, and computational modeling, contributing to ongoing discussions on the EU Green Deal and the future of global food systems.
