Sustainable agriculture has become increasingly important due to challenges related to climate change, environmental degradation, and food security.
Adopting green agricultural practices involves implementing methods that reduce environmental impact while still maintaining productivity. However, a fundamental question arises: are farmers motivated by concerns for sustainability, or do they primarily adopt green practices due to economic incentives?
The first step in encouraging the self-adoption of green practices is to raise farmers’ awareness of the environmental impacts of their current methods.
To achieve this, we have developed a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that illustrates these impacts for profit-maximizing farms operating in various Italian provinces at specific altitudinal zones.
Created using HTML and PHP, the GUI allows users to input geographic and economic parameters such as:
– Province
– Terrain elevation (plain, hill, or mountain)
– Prices for wheat, fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides
The optimization process then provides:
– Estimated yield
– Estimated profit
– Recommended levels of fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides needed.
